Description
This striking natural history illustration depicts two Herring Gulls — one in graceful mid-flight showing white and black-tipped wings, the other standing on a rocky shoreline amid shells and coastal vegetation, with a cloud-streaked coastal sky behind them. The plate is from John James Audubon's monumental work 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), one of the most celebrated ornithological publications ever produced, renowned for its life-sized, scientifically accurate yet artistically vibrant depictions of North American birds. The Herring Gull, a common sight along North American coastlines, is rendered with characteristic Audubon dynamism and botanical-shoreline detail.
