Description
This plate depicts two white-winged silvery gulls rendered with striking scientific precision — one perched alert atop a rocky outcrop, the other resting serenely on the ground below, both showing their characteristic pale plumage and yellow bills against a softly clouded coastal background. The work originates from John James Audubon's monumental publication 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), one of the most celebrated ornithological works ever produced, in which Audubon painted every bird life-size. Plate 282 captures the calm, luminous quality of these Arctic seabirds with the botanical-illustration accuracy and dramatic naturalism for which Audubon is universally renowned.
