Description

A magnificent frigatebird (Fregata magnificens) swoops dramatically downward in near-silhouette, its jet-black plumage and deeply forked wingspan dominating the composition, while two small pink-footed chicks tumble in the upper corners of a pale cream ground. The bird's iridescent blue eye ring and hooked beak are rendered with Audubon's characteristic scientific precision. This plate (No. 271) is from Audubon's landmark 'Birds of America' (1827–1838), one of the most celebrated ornithological works ever produced, originally published as a series of life-sized hand-colored aquatint engravings.
