Description

This plate depicts two Stormy Petrels in dynamic poses above choppy open-ocean waves, their wings spread wide as they skim the sea surface in their characteristic skittering flight. The birds are rendered in dark brown-black plumage with distinctive yellow feet, set against a turbulent blue-green sea and a pale creamy background typical of Audubon's celebrated double-elephant folio format. Plate 270 from John James Audubon's 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), one of the most revered ornithological works ever published, captures the Wilson's Storm-petrel with the scientific precision and dramatic naturalism that made Audubon's hand-colored engravings legendary.
