Description
This hand-colored engraving from Audubon's landmark 'Birds of America' portrays two Arctic Jaegers — one in dramatic mid-flight with swept-back wings, the other perched alertly on rocky coastal cliffs with a dramatic headland and open sea beyond. The composition captures both the birds' graceful aerodynamics and their rugged maritime habitat with the scientific precision and artistic elegance for which Audubon became celebrated. 'Birds of America,' published between 1827 and 1838, is considered one of the greatest ornithological works ever produced, renowned for its life-size, naturalistic depictions of North American birds.
