Description

Two Common Cormorants — one nesting low among sea grasses, the other standing upright with beak open — are depicted with striking naturalistic detail against a rocky coastal cliff and overcast sky. This plate (No. 266) originates from John James Audubon's landmark ornithological work 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), a monumental series of 435 hand-colored aquatint engravings celebrated as one of the greatest achievements in natural history illustration. The dramatic composition captures both the birds' glossy dark plumage and the wild, windswept coastal habitat they inhabit.
