Description

This hand-colored engraving from Audubon's monumental 'Birds of America' depicts two Pigmy Curlews — now known as Curlew Sandpipers — in a marshy shoreline setting, one bird probing the shallows while the other stands alert in rich rufous breeding plumage amid reeds and rocks. The composition showcases Audubon's signature naturalistic detail and graceful, lifelike posturing against a softly rendered coastal background. Originally published in the double-elephant folio edition (1827–1838), 'Birds of America' is widely regarded as one of the finest ornithological works ever produced, featuring 435 hand-engraved, hand-colored plates.
