Description

A majestic Whooping Crane stands in three-quarter profile against a serene wetland backdrop, its slate-gray plumage, distinctive red crown, and elongated neck rendered with striking naturalistic detail. In the distant background, additional white cranes wade through a shallow marsh beneath snow-capped mountains, evoking the wild American frontier. This plate (No. 261) was engraved for Audubon's monumental work 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), one of the most celebrated ornithological publications in history, prized for its life-size, scientifically accurate illustrations.
