Description
This elegant plate from John James Audubon's landmark ornithological series depicts two Wilson's Phalaropes — one in graceful mid-flight with wings spread wide and russet-streaked plumage on full display, and a second resting quietly among marsh grasses along a shoreline. The composition captures both the movement and stillness of these migratory shorebirds with the meticulous naturalism Audubon was celebrated for. Wilson's Phalarope is native to North America and is notably one of the few bird species in which the female is more brightly colored than the male, a detail Audubon rendered with characteristic scientific precision.
