Description

A large, dark-plumed cormorant with a vivid orange-red throat pouch perches dramatically on a weathered stump, its neck craned upward and beak open, set against a tranquil waterway with distant foliage. This plate — No. 252 from John James Audubon's monumental 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838) — depicts what was then called the Florida Cormorant (now identified as the Double-crested Cormorant), a species commonly found along Florida's coastlines, lakes, and rivers. Rendered with Audubon's characteristic precision and life-like drama, the composition captures both the bird's iridescent plumage and its commanding presence in a naturalistic habitat scene.
