Description

This hand-colored engraving from John James Audubon's landmark ornithological work 'The Birds of America' depicts two Pied-billed Grebes (Podilymbus podiceps) in their natural wetland habitat, one swimming low in the water and the other diving, surrounded by reeds, grasses, and a gnarled branch. The composition captures Audubon's signature naturalistic detail and dynamic posturing, rendered in soft earthy greens, warm browns, and muted teals against a pale cream paper ground. Audubon's 'Birds of America,' published between 1827 and 1838, is celebrated as one of the greatest ornithological works ever produced, featuring life-size illustrations of North American birds engraved by Robert Havell Jr. in London.
