Description

This plate from John James Audubon's celebrated 'Birds of America' series depicts two Velvet Ducks (now commonly called White-winged Scoters) posed on a rocky shoreline with a calm waterway visible in the background. One bird rests on a stone while the other stands upright with its bill open, showcasing the species' distinctive dark plumage and pink-orange feet with remarkable naturalistic detail. Audubon's 'Birds of America,' produced between 1827 and 1838, is widely regarded as one of the greatest ornithological works ever published, featuring life-size illustrations of North American birds rendered with extraordinary scientific and artistic precision.
