Description
This plate from John James Audubon's celebrated 'Birds of America' depicts two American Snipes rendered in meticulous naturalistic detail amid marsh grasses and a tranquil wetland setting, one bird upright and alert, the other low and probing the ground. The soft cream paper border, characteristic of Audubon's original hand-colored aquatint engravings, frames the composition with scholarly elegance. Audubon's 'Birds of America' (published 1827–1838) is widely regarded as one of the greatest achievements in ornithological illustration, documenting over 400 North American bird species in life-size, true-to-habitat poses.
