Description

This plate depicts three Great Marbled Godwits rendered in exquisite naturalistic detail, their long upturned bills and richly mottled brown-and-buff plumage set against a backdrop of marsh grasses and reeds. The birds are shown in characteristic shorebird poses — foraging and alert — capturing the lifelike immediacy that defines Audubon's landmark work, 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), one of the most celebrated ornithological publications in history. The Great Marbled Godwit, a large North American shorebird that breeds on the Great Plains and winters along coastal mudflats, is faithfully portrayed with the scientific accuracy and artistic elegance that made Audubon's double-elephant folio plates iconic.
