Description

This plate depicts two Black-crowned Night Herons — one adult in striking black, white, and gray plumage leaning low over a marsh pool, and one juvenile in streaked brown — set against a lush background of reeds, broad leaves, and delicate white blossoms, with a small frog visible at the water's edge. The composition radiates Audubon's hallmark naturalistic drama and meticulous botanical detail. It is Plate 236 from John James Audubon's monumental 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), one of the most celebrated ornithological works ever produced, originally published as double-elephant folio aquatint engravings by Robert Havell Jr. in London.
