Description

This plate depicts two Tufted Ducks — a brownish female at left and a striking black-and-white male at right with his distinctive drooping head tuft — rendered in Audubon's characteristically precise naturalist style against a sparse grassy ground. The image is from John James Audubon's monumental work 'The Birds of America,' originally published between 1827 and 1838 and celebrated as one of the finest ornithological publications ever produced.
