Description
This plate depicts a pair of Hooded Mergansers — the striking black-and-white male with his signature fan-shaped crest raised, and the subtler rufous-crested female — perched together on a rocky, reed-fringed shoreline. The composition captures the birds in characteristic resting posture with calm, reflective water at their feet, rendered in the precise, naturalistic style that made Audubon's 'Birds of America' (published 1827–1838) a landmark of ornithological illustration. Originally engraved by Robert Havell Jr. as Plate CCXXXII, this image comes from one of the most celebrated natural-history works ever produced, prized equally as fine art and scientific record.
