Description

Two Ruddy Plovers — known today as Sanderlings — are depicted foraging along a rocky coastal shoreline, rendered with Audubon's characteristic scientific precision and naturalistic grace. Small pebbles and eggs dot the foreground while a misty blue bay and distant mountain headland recede into the background. This plate (No. 230) was originally published in Audubon's monumental 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), one of the most celebrated ornithological works ever produced, prized for its life-sized, hand-colored aquatint engravings.
