Description
This hand-colored engraving depicts two Piping Plovers — small, pale shorebirds with distinctive orange-tipped bills and partial black neck bands — resting on a rocky coastal bluff with the open sea visible in the background. The composition showcases Audubon's meticulous naturalist style, rendered with delicate color washes over fine engraved lines. Plate 220 from Audubon's monumental 'Birds of America' (published 1827–1838), one of the most celebrated ornithological works ever produced, illustrates the Piping Plover in its natural Atlantic coastal habitat.
