Description

This hand-colored engraving from John James Audubon's monumental 'The Birds of America' depicts the Hyperborean Phalarope (now known as the Red-necked Phalarope) in three poses — one in dramatic flight with wings spread, and two others resting on rippling green water. The composition showcases Audubon's signature naturalistic style, capturing the birds' distinctive rufous-and-gray plumage with meticulous detail. Originally published between 1827 and 1838, 'The Birds of America' is celebrated as one of the finest ornithological works ever produced, featuring 435 hand-colored aquatint engravings of North American bird species.
