Description
This striking plate depicts a Great Blue Heron poised in a dramatic hunting stance, its long neck curled and bill angled downward toward the reeds and water below, rendered with extraordinary botanical and ornithological precision. The bird's slate-blue and chestnut plumage is set against delicate marsh grasses and a pale cream background, conveying both scientific accuracy and painterly elegance. Originally published in Audubon's landmark folio 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), this plate—number 211—is one of the most celebrated images from that work, which documented over 400 North American bird species and remains one of the most valuable books in the history of natural history illustration.
