Description
This hand-colored engraving from Audubon's monumental 'Birds of America' depicts two Salt Water Marsh Hens — now known as the Clapper Rail — amid tall coastal marsh grasses at the water's edge, one bird calling upward with beak open while the other moves low along the ground. The composition captures the birds' natural wetland habitat with Audubon's characteristic lifelike precision and warm, naturalistic palette. 'Birds of America,' originally published between 1827 and 1838, is considered one of the most celebrated ornithological works ever produced, featuring life-size illustrations of North American bird species.
