Description

A commanding Canada Goose stands alert with beak open amid lush reeds and willow branches, while a second goose rests beside two large eggs on a rocky shore — capturing a nesting scene with dramatic naturalism and rich botanical detail. This is Plate 201 from John James Audubon's monumental work 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), widely regarded as one of the greatest ornithological achievements in history, originally engraved in life-size double-elephant folio format. The Canada Goose (Branta canadensis), depicted here in its familiar black-necked plumage, is one of the most recognizable waterfowl of North America, and Audubon's portrayal conveys both scientific precision and artistic grandeur.
