Description

Two Olive-sided Flycatchers — one perched alertly on a bare branch above, the other clinging dynamically to a spray of spruce boughs laden with elongated cones below — are rendered with Audubon's characteristic scientific precision and naturalistic vitality. The birds' dark olive-brown plumage and streaked white underparts are captured against a pale cream background, evoking the open coniferous forests these birds inhabit across North America. This plate is from John James Audubon's landmark ornithological work 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), widely regarded as one of the most important natural-history publications ever produced.
