Description

A barn swallow with iridescent blue-black upperparts, a russet throat, and a deeply forked tail is depicted mid-flight as it tends to its mud-and-grass nest built against a wooden beam — a faithful natural-history illustration rendered with remarkable scientific precision. This plate is number 173 from John James Audubon's landmark work 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), one of the most celebrated ornithological publications ever produced, originally engraved and hand-colored at life size by Robert Havell Jr. in London. The delicate cream ground and spare composition give the piece an elegant, specimen-study quality that suits both naturalist and classic interior aesthetics.
