Description
Two barn owls are dramatically rendered against a dark, moody nocturnal sky, one spreading its wings wide while clutching prey and the other perched on a branch below, both depicted with striking naturalistic detail. This plate is Plate 171 from John James Audubon's monumental work 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), one of the most celebrated ornithological publications in history, originally produced as life-sized hand-colored aquatint engravings. The composition showcases Audubon's signature dynamic poses and meticulous feather detail, capturing the barn owl's distinctive heart-shaped face and golden-brown plumage against a landscape of water and distant hills.
