Description

A dramatic naturalist study depicts a Rough-legged Hawk (historically called Rough-legged Falcon) gripping prey on a gnarled branch, wings spread wide in dark brown, black, and white plumage against a pale cream ground. The bird's fierce downward gaze and dynamic pose convey raw predatory energy in Audubon's signature life-size style. This plate appears in John James Audubon's landmark 'Birds of America' (1827–1838), one of the most celebrated ornithological works ever produced, originally engraved in London by Robert Havell Jr.
