Description

This striking plate from John James Audubon's monumental 'Birds of America' (1827–1838) depicts two Turkey Buzzards — now commonly called Turkey Vultures — perched on a lichen-covered branch, rendered with extraordinary naturalistic detail. One bird faces upward with its distinctive bare red head and hooked beak fully visible, while the other displays its dark, iridescent plumage from behind. Audubon's 'Birds of America,' engraved and printed in London in double-elephant folio format, is one of the most celebrated ornithological works ever produced and remains a landmark of natural history illustration.
