Description

Two dark-plumaged Snow Birds (Dark-eyed Juncos) perch on bare winter branches bearing small dark berries, rendered with meticulous naturalistic detail against a soft cream background. The upper bird clings to a slender twig while the lower displays the species' characteristic dark hood and pale underparts. This plate comes from John James Audubon's monumental 'Birds of America' (1827–1838), one of the most celebrated ornithological works ever produced, originally engraved and hand-colored at life size by Robert Havell in London.
