Description
Two Great Crested Flycatchers are depicted with characteristic naturalist precision — one perched on a bare branch with tail fanned, the other captured mid-flight above it, wings spread wide against a soft cream background. The composition conveys the lively energy and territorial behavior of this North American songbird, rendered in warm olive, russet, and buff tones. This plate is from John James Audubon's monumental work 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), widely celebrated as one of the finest ornithological illustration projects ever produced, in which Audubon documented over 400 bird species of North America in life-size, dynamic poses.
