Description

Two Black Vultures with dark, glossy plumage and bare grey heads are depicted feeding on the carcass of a deer, rendered with Audubon's characteristic life-sized naturalism against a pale, neutral background with a hint of grassy ground. The composition conveys raw, unsentimental nature — wings spread and necks outstretched in the act of scavenging. This plate (CVI) is from John James Audubon's landmark ornithological work 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), one of the most celebrated natural history publications ever produced, originally printed as large-format hand-colored engravings by Robert Havell Jr. in London.
