Description

A Purple Gallinule — rendered with striking iridescent blue-green and violet plumage, a vivid red-and-yellow bill, and outsized yellow feet — strides along a sandy bank beside marsh grasses and a soft, hazy waterway. This plate is from John James Audubon's monumental 'Birds of America' (1827–1838), one of the most celebrated works in natural history illustration, in which Audubon depicted each species life-size using watercolor and engraving.
