Description

This luminous natural history plate depicts two Passenger Pigeons — a male and female — perched on a gnarled branch with dried oak leaves, their plumage rendered in warm rufous-chestnut, blue-gray, and soft brown tones against a pale cream ground. The Passenger Pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius) was once the most abundant bird in North America before being driven to extinction in the early 20th century, and Audubon's iconic illustration from 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838) remains one of the most celebrated scientific and artistic records of the species.
