Description
This hand-colored engraving from John James Audubon's monumental 'Birds of America' depicts a vivid scarlet male Northern Cardinal perched on a berry-laden branch above a softer-hued female, both rendered with Audubon's signature naturalistic precision. The plate — labeled 'Pl. 203' — is one of 435 life-size illustrations Audubon produced between 1827 and 1838, originally engraved by Robert Havell Jr. in London. The warm cream tones of the aged page and the lush botanical detail give this piece timeless scientific and artistic appeal.
