Description

A richly detailed depiction of a Louisiana Heron — now commonly known as the Tricolored Heron — rendered in deep slate-blue and teal plumage with delicate white underparts, poised in a hunting stance along a tranquil Southern waterway. The bird is set against a luminous backdrop of tall palms and lush subtropical vegetation, evoking the Gulf Coast wetlands of Louisiana that Audubon explored extensively in the early 19th century. This plate (No. 217) appeared in Audubon's celebrated 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), one of the most important ornithological works ever published, renowned for its life-sized, scientifically precise yet artistically vibrant illustrations.
