Description

This striking plate depicts four Ivory-billed Woodpeckers — the largest woodpecker native to North America — arranged dynamically across lichen-draped branches, showcasing the species' bold black-and-white plumage and vivid red crests on the males. Originally published as Plate 66 in Audubon's monumental 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), this image is one of the most celebrated ornithological illustrations ever produced. The Ivory-billed Woodpecker, once found in the old-growth forests of the American Southeast, is now considered critically endangered or possibly extinct, lending the image both scientific and historical significance.
