Description
This magnificent plate depicts a large American White Pelican rendered in exquisite detail against a moody, darkened riverine landscape, its snowy plumage, golden-orange bill, and breeding crest crest captured with scientific precision and artistic grace. The work originates from John James Audubon's landmark publication 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), widely regarded as one of the greatest ornithological works ever produced. Audubon documented the American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) — a species native to inland lakes and coastal waters of North America — as Plate CCCXI, bringing it to life at life-size scale in his signature naturalist style.
