Description

This iconic 1896 lithographic bicycle poster by American illustrator Edward Penfield depicts a confident, red-haired woman in a boater hat and plaid skirt riding a bright orange Stearns bicycle in profile against a muted gray-green background. The bold, flat-color Art Nouveau style and direct text — 'Ride a Stearns and be content' — reflect Penfield's celebrated work as art director of Harper's Monthly, which helped establish the American poster movement of the 1890s. Penfield created a series of bicycle posters during the height of the American cycling craze, and this Stearns piece is among his most recognized commercial works.
