Description

This iconic Art Nouveau lithograph poster depicts a menacing black cat seated before a glowing red halo-like disc, rendered in bold graphic lines against a warm tan ground. Created by Théophile Alexandre Steinlen in 1896, it advertised the touring cabaret show of Rodolphe Salis's Le Chat Noir — the legendary Montmartre nightclub in Paris, France, celebrated as one of the birthplaces of modern cabaret culture. The dramatic contrast of black, red, and gold with the cat's fierce, direct gaze made this one of the most recognizable posters of the Belle Époque era.
