Description

A late 19th-century French advertising poster for Aux Buttes Chaumont, a men's clothing shop located on the Boulevard de la Villette at the corner of the Faubourg Saint-Martin in Paris, depicting a tall, elegantly dressed gentleman in a top hat and frock coat alongside three smaller male figures in various suits, with prices listed in red and black for items such as a Complet Cérémonie at 35 and 45 francs. The Buttes-Chaumont district of Paris, in the 19th arrondissement, was a bustling working-class commercial neighborhood, and this shop traded on its proximity to major thoroughfares to attract a broad clientele. Jules Chéret, widely regarded as the father of the modern lithographic poster, brought lively color and dynamic figure work to commercial advertising in Belle Époque France.
