Description

This vibrant Belle Époque advertising poster by Jules Chéret — widely regarded as the father of the modern poster — promotes men's and boys' ready-to-wear clothing from Aux Buttes Chaumont, a Parisian department store with locations on Boulevard de la Villette and Faubourg Saint-Martin. Three elegantly dressed men in top hats flank a young boy in a fitted coat, with prices for a redingote (frock coat), veston suit, and pardessus (overcoat) printed at the foot. Aux Buttes Chaumont took its name from the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, a picturesque landscaped park in northeastern Paris created under Baron Haussmann in the 1860s, giving the store an aspirational, fashionable identity in the city.
