Description

This vibrant late-19th-century French advertisement by poster pioneer Jules Chéret depicts two elegantly dressed women flanking a young child in fashionable winter coats, promoting ready-to-wear clothing at Aux Buttes Chaumont, a Parisian department store located at the corner of Boulevard de la Villette and Faubourg Saint-Martin. Aux Buttes Chaumont — named after the scenic Parc des Buttes-Chaumont in the 19th arrondissement of Paris — was one of the era's popular grands magasins offering affordable bourgeois fashion. Prices for a 'Visite' coat (59 francs), a child's 'Pelisse' (17.50 francs), and a 'Redingote' (49 francs) are prominently displayed in bold red type, capturing the commercial energy of Belle Époque retail.
