Description
This richly hand-colored antique world map, titled 'Typus Orbis Terrarum,' depicts the known world in an oval projection framed by dramatic cloudscapes, with Latin inscriptions naming the continents, oceans, and a Cicero quotation along the bottom. The map was first published by Abraham Ortelius in his 1570 atlas 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum,' widely regarded as the first modern atlas, and it represents a landmark achievement in Renaissance cartography. The warm ochres of the landmasses, the deep blues of the oceans, and the decorative border give it a distinguished, scholarly presence suited for a study, library, or home office.
