Description

This iconic repeating textile design features pairs of thrushes plucking strawberries amid a lush, densely interwoven ground of indigo blue filled with strawberry plants, tulips, lotuses, and scrolling acanthus foliage in rich greens, reds, and golds. The composition is perfectly symmetrical and rhythmic, conveying the ornate, nature-inspired beauty of the British Arts and Crafts movement. 'Strawberry Thief' was designed by William Morris in 1883 and was the first of his designs to use the complex and costly indigo-discharge printing technique at his Merton Abbey Works in Surrey, England.
