Description
This hand-colored double-hemisphere world map, engraved by Emanuel Bowen and published in 1744, presents the entire known world in two circular projections flanked by allegorical figures representing the continents and classical learning. Richly detailed with trade wind lines, continental outlines, and decorative cartouches, it reflects the Age of Exploration's ambition to chart the globe. Bowen was one of England's foremost cartographers of the 18th century, appointed Geographer to King George II, and his world maps are prized for their ornate artistry and geographic accuracy for their era.
