Description

Gustav Klimt's 'The Virgin' (1913) depicts a swirling cluster of sleeping female figures entwined in a mass of richly patterned, jewel-toned robes and blossoms, with a central young woman — the maiden — resting at the heart of the composition in a dreamlike reverie. The canvas explodes with Klimt's signature decorative vocabulary: bold spirals, scattered flowers, and interlocking colour fields in cobalt blue, violet, and gold that dissolve the boundary between figure and ornament. Now housed in the National Gallery in Prague, this late Symbolist masterwork is considered one of Klimt's most sensuous celebrations of femininity and the transition from innocence to womanhood.
