Description

This richly detailed chromolithographic plate depicts a lush, dense composition of mosses and liverworts (Muscinae / Laubmoose), rendered with meticulous botanical accuracy in warm greens, reds, and golds. The illustration originally appeared in Ernst Haeckel's landmark scientific art folio 'Kunstformen der Natur' (Art Forms in Nature), first published between 1899 and 1904, which paired rigorous natural-history observation with Art Nouveau aesthetics. The plate was lithographed by A. Giltsch and showcases the extraordinary structural variety of bryophyte sporophytes and gametophytes, making it as decorative as it is scientific.
