Description

This antique hand-coloured engraved map depicts the region around Venlo, a city on the Maas (Meuse) River in the present-day Dutch province of Limburg, showing the course of the Fossa Eugeniana — a 17th-century canal project commissioned by Archduke Albert and Isabella of the Spanish Netherlands, intended to connect the Rhine and Maas rivers and bypass Dutch toll points, though never completed. The map labels key features in Latin and Dutch, including 'Campi Venlo' (the Venlo fields) and 'de Heyde van Venlo' (the Venlo heath), rendered with fine topographic hatching and soft ochre, green, and rose washes typical of early Baroque cartography. It offers a rare window into the strategic waterway ambitions of the early 17th century and the rural landscape of the Lower Rhine–Maas corridor.
