Description

This antique hand-colored engraved map depicts the Palatinate of the Rhine (Palatinatus ad Rhenum), the historic region of the Electoral Palatinate in what is now southwestern Germany, including the Rhine River valley and surrounding territories. The map features decorative cartouches, a heraldic coat of arms bearing the Bavarian lozengy pattern, and a cherubic figure alongside a column — hallmarks of 17th-century Dutch or German cartographic craftsmanship. The Rhineland Palatinate, centered on the Rhine corridor between modern-day Heidelberg and Mainz, was one of the most strategically significant electoral principalities of the Holy Roman Empire.
