Description

This striking plate depicts a Great White Heron — now considered a white morph of the Great Blue Heron — caught mid-strike with a fish crosswise in its bill, its plumage rendered in luminous whites against a dramatic stormy blue-grey sky and coastal shoreline. The composition is from John James Audubon's monumental 'The Birds of America' (published 1827–1838), widely regarded as one of the finest ornithological works ever produced, featuring life-size illustrations engraved and hand-colored by Robert Havell Jr. in London. The background hints at a low-lying coastal settlement, consistent with Audubon's observations of the species in the Florida Keys, lending the piece both scientific precision and romantic natural drama.
